How I got my first paying client as a freelance content writer

Recommendation.

A couple of years ago, I started writing and publishing on Medium. I wrote on topics related to parenting, career, motivation and a few book reviews. I wrote because I liked to write. I never did see it turning into a full-time career and business.

Once a marketer, always a marketer.

Every time I published a new article, I made sure to promote the article link across my LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram profiles. I even put up a WhatsApp status re-directing my contacts to the article.

I responded to comments that I received about my posts. Many of them were through channels like Facebook Messenger, a WhatsApp text or verbal conversations.

Feedback started trickling in. My writing was resonating with some people within my social networks.

Then, out of the blue, I was approached to start writing in a professional capacity. One of my contacts on LinkedIn saw my articles and re-directed their contact to me for LinkedIn content writing. I have previously worked extensively on LinkedIn as a B2B marketer, running organic and paid campaigns.

I decided to give it a shot. I am known to give my best at any task that I undertake. At the same time, I strongly believe that it is better to try and fail than not try at all. I am grateful that the referee and the client, both, saw potential in my writing and offered me a chance.

In the last six months, I have become better and more confident at it. I read books on freelancing, metaverse and behavioral science to become better at my skill and learn about other industries. Freelance content writing and marketing have been working well for me although I did make a few changes to adapt to it.

The Learning

  1. No matter how small or insignificant it may seem, always ‘market’ what you do.

It will amplify your reach, and make you seen and heard.

You never know where your next opportunity comes from and the potential that it may bring for you.

Marketing will go a long way to bring you your future clients.

  2. You can build a career doing what you like to do and make money out of it.
